The poem above was written by a German priest after the end of World War II. It talks about how the intellectuals and religious leaders in Nazi Germany stayed silent while people of many groups increasingly lost their freedoms and lives.
In the book, similarly, the people of London were unconcerned about the Martians until they were directly impacted. They heard news of the Martian attack in the common, knew that all the telegraph lines were down, knew that the suburbs to the south were on fire, saw refugees entering the city, heard the noises of fighting, and had access to newspaper updates, but chose to ignore it all.
