Why did earnest men gather in Philadelphia to discuss amending the Articles of Confederation? How did they end up with the Constitution instead?

They thought of amending the Article of Confederation because mostly, the Article of Confederation created a weak central government. They ended up with the constitution with different proposals for how the new government should be. This soon lead to the making of the Constitution.
