The Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution was proposed in 1923 and approved by Congress in ____, but never ratified by the requisite three-quarters of the states.

It was approved by the Congress in 1972. 

Specifically, it happened on March 22 of this year. Congress set a deadline for  state ratification for 1979, but this deadline was not met.
