1) y varies INVERSELY with x. If y= 40 when x= 16, find x when y= -5.
2) y varies DIRECTLY with x. If y= 15 when x= -18, find y when x=1.6.
3) If x and y vary DIRECTLY, as x DECREASES, what happens to the value of x?
4) If x and y vary DIRECTLY, as y INCREASES, what happens to the value of x?

1. y=k/x (k being a constant)

40= k/16    
k= 640

so... -5= 640/x     x=-128

2. y=kx (k being a constant)

15= -18k
k=-15/18

so... y= (-15/18)(1.6)= -4/3

3. y=kx

If you're talking about as x decreases, what happens to y, then the answer would be that y decreases as well. You can plug in any amounts to prove this. The answer is the same vice versa.

4. y=kx

The value of x increases when the value of y increases.
